Help and support
Answers to common questions about Hinto. The same help is in the app: Settings → Support → Help.

If something went wrong, Settings → Support → Share debug info adds what we need to help. Card text is left out.
Creating cards
How do I make cards from a textbook or my notes?
Create → Scan pages, or Import a file for a PDF, CSV or text file. Hinto reads the page and makes cards: questions become question cards, word lists become vocabulary, and notes become key facts. Each scan makes a new deck.
Can I type cards myself?
Yes. Library → a deck → Add cards → Type a card, or the + in Library for a new deck. Choose Question & answer, Vocabulary or Choices (multiple choice).
Can I add more pages to a deck I just made?
Yes. Right after a scan, tap Add more pages to it. Later, open the deck and use Add cards.
The deck name isn't right.
Hinto names a scan after the page's heading, or the source you type. Change it at the top of Review cards, or later in Deck settings.
Checking the cards
What is the Review cards screen?
Every card Hinto found, before it goes into a deck. Checked cards are added. Tap the circle on the left to leave a card out, and tap a card to edit it.
Some cards say Add answer.
The page didn't print an answer, so Hinto doesn't guess. Tap Add answer to type it. For a multiple-choice question, tap the right choice instead.
How do I see one page's cards?
Tap the page number (p1, p2…) above the page picture. The list jumps to that page's cards.
Studying
What is a run?
A short study session on one deck: a few cards due for review and a few new ones. Tap today's stack on the Study tab to start. You can always start another run on any deck.
Knew it or Forgot?
Knew it if you remembered before seeing the answer (using the hint is fine). Forgot if you needed the answer. Be honest: forgotten cards just come back sooner, and that's how they stick. Swipe right or left, or use the buttons.
I tapped the wrong answer.
Tap Undo (the curved arrow at the top). The card comes back so you can answer again.
How does Hinto decide when a card comes back?
It schedules each card with FSRS, a memory model: cards you know well come back after longer gaps, and forgotten ones sooner.
Multiple choice
How do multiple-choice cards work?
Tap the choice you think is right. A right choice counts as Knew it, a wrong one as Forgot, and the answer is shown either way. Tap Next to go on. With 3 or 4 choices, the order changes each time.
I don't know the answer.
Tap I don't know. It counts as Forgot and shows the answer.
I want to recall the answer instead of choosing.
Deck settings → turn off Show choices. The cards then show only the question, and you flip them like other cards.
Daily goal and streak
What's the daily goal?
Finish one run of any deck, of any size. Each day you do gets a stamp, and the stamps in a row are your streak.
What if I miss a day?
Every 7 days in a row earns a streak freeze. If you miss a day, it's used automatically and your streak is safe.
Some days there's nothing due.
Days with nothing to review neither break nor grow your streak. A run you finish late still counts for the day you started it.
Decks
How do I find a deck?
Library has search, and filters for level, language, tags and decks you made or imported. Add tags in Deck settings.
I deleted a deck by mistake.
Tap Undo on the message right away. Later, Library → Recently deleted keeps it for 30 days, with its study history.
Where do the decks in Discover come from?
Hinto makes them from free sources, such as the JMdict dictionary, and lists the credits on each deck's page. Get adds one to your Library. When a newer version comes out, the button says Update, and your study history is kept.
Sharing decks
How do I share a deck?
Open the deck → Share. Send the file by AirDrop, Messages or Mail. Only the cards travel, with your name as the creator; your study progress stays with you.
How do I add a deck someone sent me?
Open the file, or Create → Import a file, then Add to Library. If you already have that deck, choose Replace (your history is kept) or Keep both.
The AI card maker
What does the AI card maker do?
It reads pages more like a person: it finds questions, choices, terms and key facts. Without it, Hinto uses its own rules and the dictionary on your iPhone.
Which AI does Hinto use?
On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence, Hinto uses Apple's model on the phone: free, and nothing leaves it. You can turn it off in Settings → AI card maker.
Your data
Where are my cards kept?
On your iPhone. There's no account, and nothing is kept on a server. Your iPhone's iCloud backup includes them, so a restored phone brings them back, streak included.
Does Hinto send anything anywhere?
Only what you choose: deck files you share, and debug info when you send it. Cards are made on your iPhone. Discover only downloads: Hinto's deck list and the decks you get. No account, no tracking.
